Skin Facts – How Much Do You Know About Your Skin?

You see it every day. You wash and clean it. You scratch it. You treat it. And sometimes you pamper it with skin care treatments.

But how well do you know the skin you’re in? We’ve put together some facts about skin care:

10 Fascinating Facts About Your Skin and Skin Care

Your skin is a fascinating organ. It is more complex, adaptive, and resilient than most people realize. Here are some interesting facts about your skin:

  1. The skin is the largest organ in the body: It makes up about 16 percent of your total body weight and covers just over 18 square feet.
  2. The skin helps regulate body temperature: Your skin serves as your body’s thermostat. Pores get smaller to retain heat when exposed to cooler temperatures. Sweat glands activate when exposed to warm temperatures to help cool the body.
  3. Your skin regenerates itself: It takes 28 days for your skin to create a new layer. It sheds dead skin cells daily. It’s not just snakes that shed their skin.
  4. Dead skin cells can remain on the skin: It’s important to remove them by exfoliating and through a variety of skin care treatments. Your skin sheds more than 30,000 skin cells per minute. That works out to about 9 lbs per year!
  5. Changes in skin are health indicators: The development of rashes, itching and other skin irritants may be a sign of an underlying health issue.
  6. Skin damage: 90% of skin damage is caused by sun exposure. Make sure you wear your sun screen and stay out of the sun during peak times. Aging UVA rays are just as strong during cloudy and overcast days. Don’t get fooled!
  7. Collagen production decreases with age: After the age of 20, you produce 1% less collagen in your skin each year.
  8. Your skin has 3 layers: The Subcutis – fat and blood vessels; Dermis – hair and sweat glands; and Epidermis – the dead skin and waterproof layer.
  9. The thick and thin of skin: The thickest skin is on your feet; the thinnest is on your eyelids.
  10. Damaged skin: Your skin will attempt to heal itself in the form of scar tissue. Scar tissue lacks hair and sweat glands and has a different appearance.

These facts are interesting. But they also communicate the importance of proper skin care to ensure your skin is healthy. Taking proper care of your skin is just as important as taking care of the rest of your body.
